Access to Clean Water
Clean drinking water access, along with other atrocities and inequities for the Indigenous communities within Canada has been a historical problem and a consequence of Eastern European colonization.

In 2021, a proposed settlement agreement worth nearly $8 billion was reached after two nationwide class action lawsuits filed against the federal government by First Nations under drinking water advisories (Stefanovich & Raycraft, 2021).

The Courts have approved a settlement between Canada and certain First Nations and their members who were subject to a drinking water advisory that lasted at least one year between November 20, 1995, and June 20, 2021.

The settlement includes compensation for Impacted First Nations and eligible individuals as well as commitments to fund the construction, operation, and maintenance of infrastructure needed to provide regular access to safe drinking water in their homes (Barry, 2023)

Services and supports for Indigenous Populations provided by the Fraser Health Authority where I work:

The Indigenous Health Program works closely with First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities to support and enhance the health and wellness of Indigenous Peoples living within our region. The region stretches from the coastal “Land Facing the Sea” of the Tsawwassen people up through the Fraser Canyon heading north. These 32 First Nations communities and four language families: Hul’q’umi’num, Halq’eméylem, Nlaka’pamux and Senćoten, represent the region. Fraser Health also provides care to six Métis Chartered Communities. We and our partners, the First Nations Health Authority and Métis Nation BC, strive to provide care that is safe, respectful, wholistic and accessible to all Indigenous Peoples.
